Moonglass by Jessi Kirby

The first thing that caught me about this book was this title. I mean, doesn't Moonglass sound so mysterious? Heartstopping? Interesting? Unique? If you thought yes to any of the above, then you absolutely must read this debut by Jessi Kirby! 4 out of 5 stars!

Summary from Goodreads: From Jessi Kirby, a debut novel about confronting the past in order to move ahead.

I read once that water is a symbol for emotions. And for a while now, I've thought maybe my mother drowned in both.

Anna's life is upended when her father accepts a job transfer the summer before her junior year. It's bad enough that she has to leave her friends and her life behind, but her dad is moving them to the beach where her parents first met and fell in love- a place awash in memories that Anna would just as soon leave under the surface.

While life on the beach is pretty great, with ocean views and one adorable lifeguard in particular, there are also family secrets that were buried along the shore years ago. And the ebb and flow of the ocean's tide means that nothing- not the sea glass that she collects on the sand and not the truths behind Anna's mother's death- stays buried forever.

This book is about trying to understand, trying to get over things, and trying to start over. It's about trying to find yourself, trying to discover, and trying to well, just try. I guess I would say that this book is about trying. Trying to well, ah, try.
It's also about slightly more normal things, like running, going on the beach, and finding sea glass. So I liked it!

I really liked Anna. She was a pretty good character, with an awesome voice and style. (Talking style I mean...) She was thoughtful, mysterious, fun, and cool. I loved how she wasn't afraid to dream, imagine, and be totally amazing! She definitely is one pretty good character for acceptance and all. And she is your total beach girl- swimmer, diver, surfer. (Well, kind of...)

What I loved about this book is that it was kind of like some of Sarah Dessen's books. Getting over something? Check. A certain boy? Check. Totally good book? Check. Totally recommended by me? Check. So check this out from the library, or buy it from a bookstore, or somehow get your hands on it!

Moonglass is the book that will bring tears to your eyes if you're not careful. It's the book you won't expect to love this passionately. It's the book that will make you think- about the sea, about the world, and about the mysteries in the world. It's a book that will silently haunt you as you dream. But most of all, it will leave you craving for more.
